Captain Beefheart – Safe As Milk – LP -180gram
This is Captain Beefheart’s debut album which came out in April 1967 and featured the 20-year-old Ry Cooder, who played guitar and wrote some of the arrangements. The band had released 2 singles prior through who originally proposed the idea of releasing an album a year earlier.
The label was presented with demos that at the time seemed too risky to release thus coming to the conclution that the label and band did not fit well. Bob Krasnow, who was then working for Karma Sutra, recruited the band to joing their rock subsiduary, Buddha Records.
The album is heavily influenced by the Blues, and this is prominent from the opening track, “Sure ‘Nuff ‘n Yes I Do”, based on Muddy Waters number Rollin’ and Tumblin’.
