Muddy Waters – Electric Mud – LP – Gatefold
This was Muddy Waters fifth studio offering an in MVR’s honest opinion one of neglected Muddy albums due to the labels insistence on changing his musical style to revive his musical career.
The album had The Rotary Connection as backing band which featured vocal high octave (star in her own right), Minnie Ripperton. Released in 1968 it brings Muddy Waters sound into the psychedelic realm taken there by Producer Marshall Chess as a recording experiment.
The album peaked at #127 on the Billboard Pop albums chart and was panned by critics at the time for its fusion of Electric Blues and Psych, but the album became quite influential with bands of the era and later was looked at as a classic Waters album…..even though Muddy hated the album at the time himself.
If you’re into your Blues, straight with no chase I’d give this album a wide berth BUT if you’re into good music full stop don’t go past this album without listening to the links below. It’s in MVR’s top 100 albums you must experience before you kick the bucket !
