David Bowie-Space Oddity-LP-180gram Limited Edition Gatefold
After Bowie departed with his label Deram, Kenneth Pitt his manager at the time negotiated a one-album deal (with options for a further one or two albums) with Mercury Records and its UK subsidiary, Philips in 1969.
Bowie had attempted to recruit Beatles producer George Martin who turned the project down while Tony Visconti loved the project and went in head first. The album was recorded on 20 June 1969 and used the in-house studio session player Rick Wakemen, Mick Wayne, Herbie Flowers and Terry Cox.
After this slow start, the song reached No. 5 in the UK and stalled at 124 in the US. After many years the album has become one of the most sort after Bowie albums. Originals with the cover go for upwards of $500 GBP for original first pressings.
